Questions about some Rules
In the topic about the Beat maneuver Salamander and me stated some questions concerning some TROS-Rules.
I thought it might be time to present them clearly in a new topic:
1.
Salamander wrote: From what I can see there is some errata in the Beat example. I believe that Mik's TN to beat should be 7 as it is an attack on the other guy's sword and I see no reason for the 1CP activation cost Mik pays in the example.
I think too, that this is an error in the rules, but it is not on the list at www.theriddleofsteel.net.
2.
Why is there no Beat Maneuver in the Sword&Shield and Mass Weapon&Shield styles?
Would any consistency, I might not see yet, occur when adding these maneuvers?
In the aforementioned discussion of this topic we came to the conclusions that a)
the maneuvers would make sense and b) are not covered by similiar moves in these
styles.
3.
Is it possible to turn a beat into a feint?
The rules always talk about "slashing" before a feint.
(Again see the topic Beat maneuver for a more detailed quote of the rules).
4.
Why is it possible to beat heavy weapons like doppelhanders or shields with a rapier?

Hi Brassel, me again. :)

I think that this is merely a case of errata in the example. I discussed this with Spartan (Mark Winkleman, the guy who did the errata for Jake) and he decided that most likely it may have been a carry over from the first printing.

I am sorry, I should have been more plain. Jake has said previously that if there is a maneuver that is not in a certain proficiency, but you feel it should be there, then add it.

I just added them to my list personally.

Yeah, good question.
4.

Laws of physics. If you are using the stark (strong part close to the hilt) of your blade on his schweck (weak part out near the tip) you can beat his blade away without too much trouble. It can be demonstrated with a pool cue and a chopstick. One person holds the pool cue like it were a two handed sword and have the other guy use the chopstick to push near the tip of the pool cue down and to the outside. Odds are you will not be able to keep it aligned. Of course this is just to help show why a rapier can beat a two handed sword. If you really want to learn more about the various aspect, there are several good schools in Germany. Or heck even check out a few of the videos on the ARMA site, or one of the many other sites with videos on Renaissance Fence.

Considering that the beat is an aggressive attack on your opponent's weapon, you basically have the ball in your court, you're calling the shots. So long as you get your strike in first (in the case of a double-red engagement) I say it's possible to knock aside the heavier blade with the lighter. The whole idea is based on your unexpected maneuver.. which is why there are restrictions on when the maneuver can be used.

What Salamander said. Yeah.

In truth most maneuvers can be performed with most weapons. If in doubt, increase the activation cost by 1 CP or something.

I say it is. Why not!

Yes. See Salamander's again.
Thanks for all your interest!
