How would you mechanicallyaccount for grabbing a weapon? right now I treat it as grappling to trap but you are grappling the weapon but maybe there are som better ideas out there.

Ways to handle it

You could treat it as one of the results of a counter for weapons such as longsword or greatsword, or depending on the style (I'm thinking rapier) extra successes to block (I'm thinking three beyond the base) could be translated into grabbing the weapon.

There are some weapons that you just aren't going to grab for a variety of reasons... daggers because they are sharp and moving a bit too fast (the hand is fair game), and trying to grab a swinging flail screams bad idea to me.

I use grappling to trap, too.

I haven't tried it, but:

Beat or Bind
followed with a Grapple

might work quite nicely. Using a Beat first would certainly help with the weapon length problem.
