Sword and Sorcerer

I'm new to sorcerer, and from what I can see this is the game I've been looking for for a long time. Some quick questions though: I've been thinking that a dark fantasy setting would go over best with my group, but I don't think I can dish out for both Sorcerer and Sword and Sorcerer at this time. Can you get by with just S&S, or is Sorcerer needed? (If the game goes over well I may pick Sorcerer up too, but that will have to wait a bit) And whats the feedback on Charnel Gods? Looked like it would be right up our ally, have some pretty big egos in my group :). Thanks for the feedback.

You definitely need Sorcerer to use (but not necessarily to benefit from) Sorcerer & Sword.

hrm, ok. So sorcerer will then be my first purchase. Is S&S required/recommended for Charnel Gods? Gah, screw text books, looks like my next student loan payout may be going to moreā€¦ important books.

I don't know if anyone's tried it (I haven't). Would it be possible to run Sorcerer & Sword using the Apprentice version of Sorcerer?

A download link can be found here at the bottom of the page.

Good luck!

Jake,

I stop just shy of saying Sorcerer & Sword is necessary for Charnel Gods. There are elements of Charnel Gods, like the Carrion Fields (to make mention of just one), that will make little or no sense if you aren't familiar with the rules from S&S. But by frugally using these forums, you could probably cobble together enough info to get a game going, until you get the scratch to buy the actual sourcebook.

Eventually, though, you're going to want to make that purchase. Sorcerer & Sword is, for my money, the best gaming related product on my shelf (and there are a lot of them). Opinions vary, of course, but I've yet to see anyone who actually owns it say anything worse than "It's great". For me, it was profound inspiration.

And if it's Charnel Gods feedback you're looking for, you can cruise these forums, or check out my website here.

Take care,
Scott

Here's another tip, Jake (from one strapped-for-cash guy to another): You don't need any book besides the main Sorcerer book to play any kind of Sorcerer game. Yes, Sorcerer & Sword is a fantastic supplement. I definitely think you should get it at some point. But you don't need it to play dark fantasy sword & sorcery using Sorcerer. Without the supplement, what you can do is this: write up a vague sword & sorcery setting, with a very vague map (made up mostly of blank spots), concentrating mostly on Color & a good definition of Humanity--write up just enough to get Players excited about the setting & enthusiastic about creating colorful & engaging characters; come up with some stat Descriptors that go with your colorful setting; shake, stir, & serve.
