We are starting to get more and more of these.
Is it perhaps time to consider a stand-down period before you can post after you create an account? It might head off the repeated "create an account, post spam, never come back" crowd. Even a non-posting period of a couple of hours would do it, I suspect.

Those of us from Commonwealth countries prefer the orderly approach, but it's not our call. :) The thread contains pretty good arguments against, though I came up with some kind of cool compromise which I've now of course forgotten.

No, I'm not talking about the same thing at all. In that thread you mention a delay so new people will read the stickies and such, and know where to post and the rules etc. You mention 24 hours as a viable period.
I'm talking about helping prevent Spam by having a one or two hour stand down. This wont deter any real posters, but will (hopefully) be a deterrant to the "I'll just sign in and send a quick spam post about my online game" crowd, as they likely wont be bothered signing in and then coming back an hour or two hours later to send the spam.
Anyway, just my 2c.

I would like to say that it got excessive over night. My experience is that these folks strike once, then go away.
I do recommend removing the spam messages to make it clear that they aren't welcome, and to make sure that there is no reward for the bad behavior. But as Ron said, it's Clinton's call.

In order to do this with some fairness, I should establish a definition of what I'm going to delete:
- I will delete any message in which the sole content advertises anything except a pen-and-paper RPG.
- I will warn the author of any message in which the sole content advertises a pen-and-paper RPG.

There might be a better alternative. I seem to recall that on some boards you log in to register and then have to waite for a message to be sent via E-MAIL to the adress you provided contianing either a activation link or password. I think this might effectively cut down on those who log in and abuse the privilage of being able to post right away.
Mr. Nixon, would this work here?
