Over in this thread Clinton is talking about upgrading the Forge to its own server, a positive but costly move.

So, I'm thinking that having an active Forge forum is something worth paying money for.

Well, there is this thing that Clinton has, that no one pays for the Forge in terms of "fees." Donations are nifty, but the hope is that they remain just that - donations.

All that said ...

1. The Donations button used to be more prominently displayed, and that might be worth discussing. (But bear in mind that we will never, ever post any information about who donates or how much.)

2. Fortunately, it seems that the whole magillah was due to one person posting a bezillion million bandwidth worth in a short time. This is just about the only way to hack the Forge, and we've often stayed alert for it. Apparently there are ways to buffer it more automatically too, and Clinton's looking into that.

So if I understand that correctly, the point is that the normally-operating Forge is not in the "red zone" for money.

H'mmm ... more money considerations regardless? Me, I like the idea of the site selling Forge gear more aggressively. I have one Forge shirt, and I think I need some more, for instance. And we don't have any with the new logo. The idea is that "all proceeds go to the server kitty."

Hmm.. I somehow managed to never notice that there were Forge Tee-shirts and such. They're not terribly well advertised (much like the donate button).

Give me a chance to get through the redundancy I'm facing and find a new job, and I will certainly buy one.

Better advertising of such things will help!
