Can I order TROS through Borders (or other major bookstores) or is it only available directly through the TROS website?
Thanks!

I ordered mine through my FLGS, so I assume you can get it ordered just about anywhere if they don't have it in stock.

It can be ordered through any (and I mean ANY) game store in the states, and most in europe and around Austrailia, although I frequently get reports that retailers claim otherwise.
On the other hand, I'm really not sure that we are available through non-gaming stores like Borders or Barnes and Noble. I know I want to get into those stores, of course.

TROS is a Real Book (TM). It has an ISBN. That means that most places should be able to order it for you. Although, I can't think of a reason why you would want to do that, when you can order it yourself from http://www.theriddleofsteel.net

Why would he want to order it from a retailer? Well, Jake would sure like him to order through a retailer. Why? Because it means exposure. If the retailer orders a few copies from the slush fund in addition to the one copy for timfire, that's a few more potential people picking up the game getting involved. Exposure is what indie rpg companies who'd like to be doing this for a living need.

I had no luck with Borders. I told them "Riddle of Steel" by J. Norwood through Driftwood Publishing, but they were unable to find it in their computer system.
The reason I want to get it through Borders is because I got a gift certificate for Xmas. If it wasn't for that I would just order it directly via the website.
I think I might try one more time before asking any of my friends if they want to "buy" this gift certificate from me. Can I get the ISBN for the core rulebook? Maybe they can find it if I give them the ISBN.
Thanks.

ISBN 0-9715314-1-2

Even with the ISBN Borders was unable to find TROS in their database.
Oh well, the quest continues. Now I'll just have to get someone to "buy" this gift certificate so I can buy the core rulebook.
Thanks everyone, anyway.

Your last chance for getting it through Borders might be trying to get one of their people (such places occasionally have a person who specifically does the ordering for their RPGs.. usually a gamer who works there) to actually go to theriddleofsteel.net and get the information needed to order it through.. Tundra? Tundra Sales Organization. If you're buying it, perhaps you can convince them to order a few more copies as well.
If that doesn't work, or you're not willing to try it, then you can always fall back on selling the gift certificate.

Actually, the idea that if you have an ISBN then the book can be ordered by any major store is false. Even big stores like Borders go through distributors, and only a limited number of them. If a given company isn't on their distributor list (as mine isn't on Border's), then they simply won't order it. I run into the problem all the time with Fencing Manuals.

Incidently, I was at the Compleat Strategist in midtown manhattan Saturday and when I asked about TROS the clerk told me it was out of print. That's false, init?
FYI they used to have a few copies but sold out a while ago.

Way false. The clerk was either dreadfully misinformed, or lying to you.
