Let Me Tell You About My HeroQuest Character

So I just sat down with the gamemaster this evening and made a character for a campaign slated to start sunday 29th.

The gamemaster has regretably made the purchase of the Hero Wars book. The reason was because of the hideous cover of the HeroQuest book. So he got the french version that has a very nice cover.

He said we'd be playing these Sartarite fellows. Like the Heortlings, except further up the mountains. And the Lunar tax collectors don't come our way.

I wasn't too sure what kind of character I wanted. I finally settled on an ambitious warrior, initiate of Orlanthi Adventurous, very much loved by his father who is the clan chieftain. His drive will eventually lead him to join the Orlanthi Rex order, and maneuver to gain influence in the tribe.

I didn't grasp much of the HeroQuest character creation rules. The conflict resolution and magic chapters seemed much easier. We opted for the list method.

I ended up with the following:

Sartarite 13
-Spear and shield 5m
-Geography of Dragon Pass
-Sartarite customs and myths
-Relation to clan
-Relation to Storm Pantheon

Warrior 17
-Keen sight
-Hide
-Ride
-Run
-Sword and shield
-Recognize enemy
-Stay awake
-Bragart
-Brave
-Relation to war band
-Loyal

Initiate of Orlanth Adventurous 17
-Leap
-Bow and arrow
-Bragart
-Mythology of shadow carriers
-Mythology of Orlanth
-Predict weather change
[Affinities]
-Combat
-Movement
-Wind

Miscellanous 13
-Ambitious 1m
-Loved by Conobar (father and clan leader)
-Retainer that carries arms
-Friend to Riwall (priest of Orlanth Rex)
-Fury of the Heavens (magical spear) 1m

His name may or may not be Alberic.

Seems pretty classic.

I'm a tad confused about the HW mention. Are you saying that you had to convert the character?

Indeed. I am not very familiar with the Glorantha setting, so I made something basic. Basically, I figured out what kind of character I wanted to play. Which was a Sartarite warlord leading hordes of barabrians against the Lunar Empire. Then I figured out how he would have been in his youth before his ascent. Because tradition demands that characters start incompetent.

The GM picked up Hero Wars in french instead of HeroQuest, because HeroQuest has a hideous and sanity-blasting ugly cover. Hero Wars in french has a very nice cover that does not look like some bad superhero comic book. Not that I agree with his choice. He should have gotten HeroQuest and torn out that awful cover instead. That character was made entirely with the Hero Wars book. I own the HeroQuest book, but it will not see much use.

Unless there is somewhere that lists the differences between Hero Wars and HeroQuest so that we can avoid getting mixed up. And maybe add HeroQuest's better rules into the campaign.

Well... Issaries web site here has quite comprehensive notes on converting from HW to HQ. It should be your first stop for "official" HeroQuest goodies.

Cheers

Yep, your character fits an archetype of Glorantha perfectly.

Just a quibble, they're inexperienced, not incompetent. Meaning they're competent, there are just people who are better. Important difference.

I think converting him would be very simple, actually, and many of the differences are minor, really.

ARe you playing with the campaign in Waterloo, Ontario? I remember Viktor Haag picking up the French rules. I picked up the German Hero Wars rules to a) practice the language b) have a very fancy book to show off.

But I actually ATTRACTED attention with the flamboyant HeroQuest covers when I did my set up at a recent convention. The rules a much improved in HeroQuest, so I suggest that your Narrator buy them. Better yet, give him a copy for his birthday!

The uglyness of the Hero Wars (the english version) and HeroQuest covers is pretty much a running gag with the gamers I know. I honestly cannot comprehend what could make someone pick such lame artwork for the cover of a book.

I like the art. Well, I'm not really much of a critic, I don't care if my RPGs come with art or not. But what I can't understand is the violence of the reaction to it. I mean, if it's bad, is is all that bad? I mean, I'm certain that there have been many worse covers on other games before.

In any case, I honestly can't comprehend anyone caring what the cover looked like. I mean, what effect does it have on play? None. So what could the furor possibly be about?

I can't speak to the cover of Hero Wars, but it's pretty obvious that the cover of HeroQuest was commissioned to be a follow-up to the Hero Wars cover. So it wasn't even choosing -- it was intentionally designed to match the first. Obviously, Greg Stafford must like the covers to use the same artist and design twice.
