After the high of Gencon Oz last week, a number of Australian Game designers have gathered together to form a design collective known as "The Stockade". This group is designed to foster the design skills of new talent and to refine the abilities of those who have a few accomplished designs under their belts.
Information about the stockade can be found through it's wordpress blog (http://stockade.wordpress.com/), or through it's google group (http://groups.google.com.au/group/stockade).
One of the first major projects of the Stockade community is a 12 month contest running from Gencon 2009 through to Gencon 2010. With the aim to produce a playable and playtested game over the period.
So if you see a few more posts from Aussies looking to design the "next big thing", that's probably where they're coming from. I'm already starting to work on my next project in this regard, and the progress of my entry will be posted to my blog, Observations of the Fox (http://vulpinoid.blogspot.com/).
