Several key historical threads in Indie Game Design (the Fastlane threads, Nicotine Girls, and a few others) have -1 listed as "total posts" and are inaccessible. From an archival perspective, this is really sad.

Are you sure you're not seeing ghosts? I wonder if those topics were re-located to the appropriate Independent Game Forum. For example, there is a
nicotine girls
topic in the Half Meme Press forum that carries the same dates and the same start and ending posters as the one in the Indie Game Design forum with the -1 total posts. Ditto for the early Fastlane topics in the Twisted Confessions forum. I'm pretty sure those topics pre-date the existance of the independent forums.
