Anyone ever thought of combining these two great tastes?  I seem to have a vague memory that Clinton posted something about TSOY really shinning when it came to the interaction between different cultures.  And surely Firefly has that in spades..

Aliiance vs Browncoats, Frontier vs Urban, Technoplenty vs primitive,  immigrant populartions all jumbled up, and of course big damn heroes.  But also no aliens, which fits nicely with TSOY's no god/monsters banner.

I haven't run much TSOY at all yet (thought a shout out to Jeff and Judd for getting me thinking about it again), so I don't know how much rework would be needed.

I figure the ability list will need a bit of shaking out, and a few secrets and keys added specific to the western genre.

Other than that I was thinking of adding some bonus abilities based on career since where folk come from isn't as important as the main TSOY world of Near.

What other ideas do folks have?

There's this on the wiki:

... a TSOY character for a Firefly style game.  But I can't for the life of me figure out what campaign or setting that character came from.

There was a Steampunk thread here recently, and I liked the 'career' Key/Secret use there.  I bet it would work well.  It might also be neat to have a Before/After section of character creation, where they have a set number of advances, split between things before/during the Unification War and then after it.  Some things might only be 'bought' during it, some after.  Someone who wants a War-affected character (Zoe?) might spend more on the Before part, others on the After part (Jayne?).  Secret of Contacts would come off very different depending on when you took it.

Bethany is actually an attempt on my part convert a character from my HeroQuest-based Firefly game over to TSoY, to see how it worked.

The original HQ game is here: http://random.average-bear.com/HQFirefly/HomePage

And the list of Sci-Fi "open" abilities that I used to build Bethany in TSoY is here: http://random.average-bear.com/TSOY/SciFiAbilities

Basically, I was trying to figure out what the rough TSoY-equivalent to an HQ character in that game would be -- worked out to about 15 advances.

For my higher-powered "Xian Quan", mythic China, high-power HQ game, I think i figured out that you'd need about 25 advances in TSoY for the starting characters.

Someone gets into trouble, then get get out of it again; people love that story -- they never get tired of it.
