Wuxia Space Opera

I've started a blog for my design of a wuxia space opera game (something i brought up here briefly a long while back), initially dealing with the setting (gotta have something to put mechanics to). You can check it out @

. Thanks.

So no one is remotely interested then, at all?

What exactly do you want, comments, or help on?

i posted the blog so people could critique, comment or malign (or even praise!) the ideas therein.

Well since I work about 11 hours a day I will try and pick apart one of the little sections at a time with you, as I dont have time to just sit down and read the entire thing. The first thing I read through was the section on space travel, and I really like the idea of the rivers definatley very cool but I think it could use at least one paragraph on inner system travel.
One thing I would like to hear a bit about other than the inner system travel methods being explained a bit more, is what type of system do you think you will be applying to this setting.
Regards, Seth

thanks. i actually did add a paragraph to that (it's fairly basic stuff; sublight travel is just conventional fast travel. I doesn't use wierd warp factor chi stuff or something).
System isn't relevant until the setting is complete. there can be no consideration of rules until then. if that puts people off then i would aks them to re examine their game design priorities really.

I read the first few entries of the blog and am uncertain as to how much was hyperbole and purple prose and how much was to be taken literally. (
Really
demons?
Really
alchemists?) The purpose might be to outline history first, and that's fine, and I don't know about others but I've been waiting for the context, the frame-of-reference, to solidify. As a fiction, it's enjoyable and I can't wait to see what happens next. As a roleplay aide, I'm confused and was going to wait further to see if any of it clears up in entries with less storytelling. The Space Travel entry is a good start on that context.

well hopefully the prose isn't
that
purple (it isn't really).
It's all to be taken literally. The setting is wuxia space opera; this means it's kung fu, demons, taoist magic and spaceships. That either floats your boat or not, really. The point is, this isn't a setting done in subtle tones. Look at the source material (well, weapons of the gods and comics like it - and the movies).
So yes, there really are demons, and there really are alchemists, and kung fu, and magic, and emperors, and starships and celestial dragons. But the entries are telling you about the places; that's the point. What they won't do is tell you the boring stuff like how many people live there, what the average weather is; it's flavourful to give you a taste of that environ and what it's about. It's not an infodump, it's a travelog of sorts.

I've never taken "go read those things over there" as a good way to introduce any kind of fiction or game, even if the content is presumed iconic. That could just be me. If you're just sketching the setting, I probably wouldn't worry about it, but you'll probably want to broach it eventually.
(I've never heard of "kung-fu space opera" before, and I watch anime. Not very much, mind.)
Now knowing the above about the genre makes the rest of it make a lot more sense.

that's because there are no kung fu space opera games or settings (to the best of my knowledge. it's got nothing to do with anime because that's a totally different genre. i don't like anime.
if youre not interested in reading a blog, that's fine. im just not sure why that would be a problem. theres no point doing anything as a download until its complete.

Hello,
I'm moderating this thread now.
If you want constructive feedback, you must ask or discuss something specific about your game here in this forum. You cannot say "go here and read this, please give me comments."
If you can't do that or don't want to, then this thread is closed.
Best, Ron

I do not understand this at all. What is the problem? A blog is a sensible way to collect material - far better than a forum full of individual threads about individual aspects. Is discussing the setting of the game not specific enough? Why should it be a problem?
I find this very unhelpful.
