technically not an rpg, but it's rpg-like

hey guys, first thread here on the forge. anyway..
i was thinking of doing a system of game, maybe not really an rpg, but kind of.
if any of you have played magic: the gathering, what i was thinking was what i always got out of playing that.
two or more "wizards", "mages", whatever, involved in epic battles, obviously not including them in the actual fight, but summoning, recruiting, using whatever means necessary to kill, or just beat, their opponent/s.
it's not technically an rpg, but what i want it to involve is highly descriptive, (ok, for the powergamers out there, it would be optional), epic combats involving a menagerie of creatures, maybe bits of equipment or even spells, that people can use to get rid of their opponent.
ok, apologies, but i love bestiaries, i admit they can get a tad bland, but not if you make them exciting and imaginative.
i realise this may be sounding like I'm just trying to rpg-ify m:tg, but I'm going to try and avoid it.
if you've got any thoughts or questions, don't be afraid to reply.

oh, i forgot, it would more than likely be GM-less as it would probably be more of a game involving role-play rather than a roleplaying experience.
.... if that makes sense.

I don't know if you're familiar with
Spellcaster
or not, but it's one of the classic games of this genre.

How does that compare with what you're envisioning?

Perhaps the creatures could be created by combining a number of monster part cards together and in addition each card has two qualties to it, which the player has to say. That way you would get some good fodder for narration.

AH, yes... Spellcaster. Talk about a game that's RIPE for making into a card set (noncollectable) or Java game.
Put each gesture onto a card, with several copies of it in the set, and add a reference card(s) for the spells and basic rules. A nice one-pack game....
Hmmm... makes me think of a different idea: translating it to use Icehouse pieces (see sig).
