I'm looking for discount layout software that is compatible with Acrobat, TIF files, and is relatively easy to learn. Preferably something I can try for a while before I purchase (like say 30 days).

Not everybody can afford to pick up a copy of the Adobe Design Suite off the shelves....

I posted roughly four million and three links to threads about layout programs and related issues in this thread a few days ago: http://www.indie-rpgs.com/viewtopic.php?t=5620

You can pick up a 30-day trial copy of Adobe InDesign from the adobe website, fully functional.  It fits your description (can export in PDF, can make use of TIF files, is fairly intuitive for me to use, at least, extrapolating from my use of Pagemaker back in the late 1980's, can be tried before you purchase).

And if you can find a college student, the educational price if you decide to buy is around $200, last I checked.

Students can get big discounts on software. Here's some sites which illustrate that point.
