I came across a book by a congitive science researcher by the name of Mark Turner.  It is entitled The Literary Mind: The Origins of Thought and Language, Oxford: Oxford UP, 1996.  For those interested in the relationship of story, metaphor and etc. to fundamental human nature, check it out.
