Rules clarification, please

Jason,

Help us out a bit regarding monster-induced Darkening.

On page 44, it says, "... the Darkening can usually claim a child's soul at the rate of 1 point per 48 hours."

Is this an extension of the description of what happens when one's Soul drops to 3, or is it a general rule for what happens when a critter who can Darken you bites you? We cannot find rules about the latter anywhere else.

When a monster decides to Darken a child, the child will start to lose Soul at the rate of one point per 48 hours. From beginning to end, the child has less than three weeks left on their mortal contract unless something can be done.
