Hi all, long time reader, first time poster.

anyways I'm a big fan of the martial arts genre and I've been thinking about a game focusing on this. The mechanic I'm thinking about trying to use is a simlutaneous card reveal, ie players select cards that define their actions and then reveal them at the same time. I have some loose ideas about how the interaction between the cards will take place, I'm thinking dice roll + a modifier based on the actual card results. But I'm curious if any of you gaming historian could think of other games that use card based combat systems. I'm looking for some other ideas that might have been tried or tested to get a feel for how this plays out. Anyways thanks for reading this.

peace,
mike

Hi R,

Welcome to the Forge!

Most notably, White Wolf's Street Fighter game used a system like this, with it boiling down to each move had an initiative and a damage rating, and true to the video games, slower moves did more damage.  It's hard to find, but well worth it for what you're talking about.

Hello,

Anyone contemplating a match-and-show system for conflict needs to be well-versed and practiced in the role-playing game Swashbuckler, written by Jim Dietz and published by Jolly Roger Games.

I am reminded of Video Fighter and the original Heavy Gear game from Dream Pod Nine. The game came with character cards. Each character had moves or attacks that were powered by the cards. There were three suits, Hi, Med, Low. There were also defense card to block attacks. and so on. Worth finding.

thanks for the feedback guys.

I'm familiar with the Heavy Gear card game, and I've only heard about the Streetfighter RPG. I'll have to look for the Streetfighter.

I've never player the Jolly Roger Games, Swashbuckler. I'm gonna go take a sweep around the 'net for it now.

Thanks again, and I'll keep y'all posted as I progress in development.

peace,
mike

Not really quite what you're looking for, but the Drama deck from TORG had some interesting interactions.

Also not-quite, but Fighter Zone Alpha was released as a freebie - and is more card-game then roleplaying game, but you can spin it - over at rpg.net. Do a search on the forums for it.

In the vein of fighting games/martial arts as card-based.

Castle Falkenstein had fencing rules that were card-based. You chose whether to attack, defend, or rest each phase (you had a certain number of mandatory rests per round, based on your skill--the more skillful, the fewer rests) and then revealed them at the same time as your opponent.
