I too am tryng to start a group, but I'm not as far along as Caitlin as I haven't identified anyone to play with.  Also, I'm not overly familiar with RPG and haven't ever experienced one under a GM.  Finally, I'm not in an area with many potential players (I live near (not in) over-40s snobville. People who think reading the Wall Street Journal is daring).

Any suggestions?

Hello,

I split the above from Starting a role-play group.

Hi Mike, and welcome!

The key is that you must start off with a nibble of some kind. So far, we don't have anything to work with. Can you provide any sort of starting point?

Best,
Ron

Hi Ron,

I'm not at my best before 8am, so please elucidate on "a nibble".  Are you asking if I have an idea for a game scenario?

Mike,

I believe Ron is trying to elicit some more information about your current situation.  Things like your  age group, the social circles you generally move in.

Ron and the guys here at the forge are pretty good at coming up with suggestions but they need some points of reference.

Cheers

Oh. OK. Once you've used a hammer to get my attention I generally catch a clue...

Context:

I'm 48, married with 2 boys I adopted 4 years ago from Chile who have emotional problems relating to the orphanage. I am attempting to use RPGs, Universalis and Risus, to continue to socialize them and they seem to be responding.  However, so far it has only been me and them. It is now time to try to widen the "group".

I would like to include some other parents and their kids, but I am at a loss as to how to identify them, introduce it to them, and initiate a group.  I live in a very self-satisfied smugly self-important area of Texas known as The Woodlands (immediately north of Houston).  Most of the people here are higher income (than me). For example, our cub scout group has the Registrar for Rice University, 2 CEOs and several professors, and me ;-) . I fit in like a belchin' dwarf at an elven soiree. Thus I don't think I'll try to recruit them as members. I have few other social contacts and I KNOW they won't be interested. I know of no RPG groups in my area that aren't teens or 20s.

I am an environmental scientist and geologist with wide-ranging interests, including fiction writing, paleontology and archeology. I speak 3 languages and read several more and have lived in Chile, Panama, and about 10 of these United States. I have worked on projects in most of the United States and throughout Latin America.  I have read extensively in scifi/fantasy for 40 years. I have played many board games, mostly war games, and my sumtotal experience with RPGs has been when I found  an old RPG game (Dragon Strike) and tried it out with my boys.  (See the post at kids-rpg Yahoo Group if you want more info on that.)

I'm doing my best, but I need help to create a viable group. Since my boys are involved the other players will probably also have to be parents and their kids or otherwise they wouldn't be able to deal with having kids around while playing.

So....  any ideas are appreciated.
