Hi, I have a couple of coding questions that I couldn’t finding answers to by searching. I’d appreciate any help.

1) When I quote someone, how do I make the header read, “Valamir said:” or “Hix wrote:” instead of “Quote:”?
2) When I link to a thread, how do I make the link say “this thread,” instead of “http://www.indie-rpgs.com/viewtopic.php?t=11357”
3) I have my location in the sidebar of my personal details. How do I put my name there, for example like lumpley has?

Cheers,
Steve.

Hi Steve,

Steve wrote: 1) When I quote someone, how do I make the header read, “Valamir said:” or “Hix wrote:” instead of “Quote:”?

Put "quote="Hix" in the brackets instead of just "quote" to get "Hix wrote:" but I'm not sure about changing to "said:"

Hix wrote: 2) When I link to a thread, how do I make the link say “this thread,” instead of “http://www.indie-rpgs.com/viewtopic.php?t=11357”

Put "URL=http://www.indie-rpgs.com/viewtopic.php?t=11357" and "/URL" in brackets surrounding "this thread" instead of just typing the URL.

I don't know for sure how he did it, but I just played with my location and added some extra stuff at the end of my location and counted on your browser's word-wrap to handle it. It looks right on mine...

(oops, cross-post with Christopher)

Quote attribution

1. If you use the quote button (to the right of the individual post's subject line), the poster's name will be inserted above the quote. This means that you will likely need to trim what you are quoting and start your post by hitting the quote button.
2. Or, edit the BBCode in this fashion:

hix wrote: blah

URL link

1. html version
<a href="http://www.indie-rpgs.com/viewtopic.php?t=11357">name of thread
2. BBCode version
name of thread

lumpley imitation

I think Vincent simply added his name to the Location field of his profile.

OK, I have one...how do you get the "[url.../url]" to show up rather than being interpreted as code for purposes of demonstration?

Chris,

I checked the "Disable HTML in this post" and "Disable BBCode in this post" boxes in the Options section of the post form.

I tried doing the same with the BBCode [code] attribute with no luck. There should be a way to do this to portions of a message without applying the condition to the entire post.

And my knowledge of html is failing me at the moment.

Answers within 20 minutes? Excellent & thank you both!

Any other questions from anyone?

Cheers,
Steve

P.S. Chris, TUA soon. I like the look of this new shard, wanted to post but RL has been intense for the last week.

[code][code]Code tags seems to work for me...[/code][/code]

Another trick I've learned is to click the "Quote" button that appears on the upper right-hand corner of each a post; this will reveal the exact content of the post and then you can use that content to see how things are done.

Note that when posting that in the lower left hand portion of the screen is a link in red labeled BBCode. which leads to:
http://www.indie-rpgs.com/faq.php?mode=bbcode

This has everything you need to know.

One other question occurs to me (which I couldn't find an answer to in BBCode). I believe I've sometimes seen people link to another thread and the link automatically goes to the specific post that's being cited - even if that's five or six down from the top of the screen.

Does anybody have any idea how that's done?

Click on the little sheet of paper at the top of the post you want to jump to
(just to the left of the `Posted: Thu 24 jun...' line.) Now your browser will be showing the correct URL in the URL bar. For example, your post to which I'm answering would be:

The Forge webserver wrote:
http://www.indie-rpgs.com/viewtopic.php?p=124975#124975
Note the `p' for post after the question mark. Normally there's a `t' for topic there. You can now just use that URL in a standard BBcode url tag, like so:
hix asked his other question right here

Well I'll be damned. I never noticed that before. I always wondered how people got the specific posts in their links. Thanks, Rob.

Now my link-fu will be unstoppable!
