So here is a way to have a little more freedom without tweaking the system too much. Give the characters 15 character creation points. A's cost 5, B's cost 4, C's 3, D's 2, E's 1, F's are free (0). Have at it!
An interesting side effect of this is that now every 15 insight points equals 1 additional character creation point untill 75 and 3 additional character points above 75.

Hi Pete.
You're right that it's a dichotomy of extremes--it was absolutely intended that way, not as a "realistic" way to create a character (our only claim to realism is in combat). If that doesn't suit your tastes, then your tweaking sounds like a good alternative.
You're wrong, however, that double priorities aren't possible. They aren't possible on your first character. See "Insight" on p. 68 TROS.

That way if someone really wants the two A priorities than the rest of them is going to suffer since obviously they have two big advantages, but at least it makes such a thing possible.
The other way for someone to make a character with double priorities is by having enough insight. So when you retire the character or he/she dies than you can make your next character have better priorities. But that is not usually for the starting character and you have to have quite a bit of insigt I believe for like a double A.

These are very similar ideas to the alternate char gen rules for Shadowrun (also uses priorities), which as the editions rolled has become the norm.

Here are my notes, to compare to yours, BPetroff. I'm a bit more complex than you are in chargen (at least with my third optional rule), and my Insight progression more simple (since I'm all for 1 CP for 15 Insight regardless of how high on the scale you go). However, if you're going to try to mimic the old Insight system more precisely, you have to notice that above 75 or so, the gaps grow larger, so you have to take that into consideration. "one point per 15" works out "close enough for government work."
Might want to check out the discussion in my thread as well, including several individuals worried about "munchkinism" with this solution.

Cool stuff Alexander. I like the 3rd rule option. Thanks also to Jake for the heads up. I didn't really shoot for this because of min-maxing possibilities, in fact I didn't even consider it. My main concern was simply flexability and individual choice. I did play with an even more open ended point system, maybe I'll post it later.

Looking back on that post is funny.. me trying to min-max for the sake of proving Lx wrong.. tied to the irony of worrying about a high TO being considered min/maxing and uncooperative play.(My most recent topic).
I still think that this idea can pose all sorts of problems... though I'd like to finally try it out in-game once.
Let us know how it goes people, so that one might see which idea's/house-rules are good and work well.. and which do not.
