What is the maximum proficiency level attainable by a character?

Since you can never have more than 25 SA points, I'm assuming it will max out at level 26. Is this correct, or does it stop at a lower number (20 perhaps?)

You can't have more than 25 SA points.  You can spend as many as a character earns over the course of their career.

I don't recall any max for proficencies in the book.

So what you're saying is that if I needed (for example) 20 SA points to increase something, I don't have to spend it all at once.  could actually spend 5 now, then another 7 a bit later, then 3 more later on and the final 5 much later?

Strange...

My interpretation was that 26 was the effective max since you couldn't have more than 25 pts to spend at any one time.  However, there is no reason you couldn't house rule the gradual spending of SA's towards advancement.  That is, spend 20 now....10 later to advance to 31 or what ever.

This would have the effect of a character being able to theoretically fund such an increase from a single SA.

To get 5 SAs to a score of 5 would mean forgoing a lot of SA advances (as some would be at 5 well before others). IMO, this is the intention. If you *really* want to get that high-cost bump it'll take planning and sacrifice. The drip-feed system removes these considerations. Personally, I don't think it is a good idea.

Cheers,

Thant's what I thought, Ian. I always interpreted it that you could only spend what you had, and it had to be all at once.

Thanks for your input, people. Much appreciated! :))

Ian has the right of it, rule-wise.. But if you don't mind the consequences, it could indeed be banked.

Matter of fact, I'm doing it that way in TRoS: Gladiators, though with good reason.
