Finding Others to Play

Man, that's seriously my main problem! I can get like my little brother and his friends but they're constantly screwing with the game and making their characters do really stupid things! (Like one always has his character howl like a wolf when he's staying in a castle.)

Any ideas?

I conscripted my little brother and sister and their friends for years after my same-age group got "serious" and went to college.  Ah, memories . . .

Try the Sci-Fi/Fantasy section of your local Barnes and Nobel.  Get a coffee, hang out and wait for some people to start browsing RPG materials.  Then strike up a conversation.
Actually if the staff is anything like the guys I work with half of them are avid gamers also.

I got my last two gamers from one conversation I had at a discussion group much like this one.

I was chatting about my group when one fellow lamented the scarcity of groups in the area, So I PM'd him and asked him if he wanted to meet for a brewski. He said 'K and we met at Jack Daws across from the Sentry Box. After that he intro'd me to his buddy, propbably wanted to make sure I was suitably twisted or something before letting me meet his friends... Since then it has been scotch, cuban cigars, beer, food, women and every once in awhile gaming...

One member I used to work with on the activation mission out at Luke AFB.

The last member is the roommate of one of the first two.

a good start is putting your location in your details so we can all see it when you post :)
Then if you happen to be say in 'Perth' Western Australia i can see it and say " Hey dude want a game "  :P

I think if that Norwood dude was as smart as he thinks he is and really did make the best RPG then he ought to have made a system to generate your own players.

Tash, that one was the best. Ya'll're (never seen a double contraction before?) some funny people tonight. Woke my girlfriend up twice just reading the Forge boards.

Seriously though, creating players isn't as hard as you might think. Most of my players for my long-running V:tM campaign were first-time gamers who went on to play after my group ran it's course.

Way I figure it, everyone is potentially a gamer. Those with a love of fantasy or science fiction are even more likely. Me, I got my old group started by telling one friend about my old games playing Vampire. He bought the book and dropped it in my lap and said let's play. Word of mouth spread the game to include most of our mutual friends and then some. Don't be afraid to reminisce to non-gamer friends. If their eyes don't glaze over, you've got a potential gamer right there.

Yeah, what Lance said. Make gamers out of non-gamers. It's not as hard as you think, and the play is great.

I started some demos at the local gaming store, I set up posters a month ahead of time then ran the demo, then invited people to come play regularly.

I'd love to run demos of TROS at our local gaming store.  However I've been told that they won't because they find it hard to keep up with the demand for TROS stock already and yet at the same time its not big enough to spin them enough money..if that doesn't defy some kind of economic logic...please let me know.  This store will never cease to amaze me.  The game you want to run is too popular for us to supply customers (solution: order more copies) yet its not popular enough for us to justify letting you run demos! arhhhh

ME (early 2003): "I'd like to place an order for The Riddle of Steel"
SHOP: "Sure..wait.. the games not out yet... oh wait yes it is.. no..no its not"
ME: "I'm sure its out and has been for some time, can i get a copy please?"
SHOP: "Yeah.. but where did you hear about this 'game'?"
ME: "On the internet..its getting fairly popular in the States"
SHOP: "Oooohhh the internet.. i wouldn't believe everything you read on the internet..its probably like that Cthulhu supplement you wanted a while back that didn't exist*"
ME: "Look.. are you going to order me a copy of the book or what?"
SHOP: "*sigh* ..sure we'll order it *eyes roll*..what was it called again..."

that was in errr March or April last year.  I purchased my book online after waiting a month or two and got the book within about 10 days.  It existed and I managed to get it cheaper online including conversion and packaging etc than I would have from the store...and sans attitude.  Then in December last year I get a phone call from the shop saying they had my copy of Riddle of Steel in... w00hoo!

* incidentally..to this day they don't believe that the Cthulhu d20 Nocturnum adventure exists.

I dying to know which store, is it heaven or down in the dungeon or elsewhere? (You don't have to name it). One of the LGS people told me sure we know about TRoS. (don't stock it but?)
